Video Games

Although video games are a controversial topic when it comes to kids, video games have been shown to have advantages to children that we don’t often consider. Video games encourage kids to use their thinking skills in unique and creative ways. They ask children to fast-acting decisions to make strategic moves like in Battlestar Galactica, which may play sending you only adults, and action plans. Video games promote kids to analyze situations, think outside the box and adapt to different situations and game play roles. Perhaps best of all, playing video games exposes kids to higher levels of technology, something that is certainly needed in the workforce.

The important thing to remember about video games for kids is that they need to be monitored by parents and caregivers. Too often, kids abuse the amount of playing time for video games, sitting in front of the television for endless hours. In addition, kids are often found playing games that are beyond their maturity level. In order for kids to reap the benefits of video games, parents must put a time limit on gameplay, as well as look for the ratings. About one hour or less is suggested per day, and depending on the age of your child, look for games that are rated E (Everybody).

Some of the most popular video games are ones that feature the loveable characters from kids television shows and movies. These games will replicate famous scenes for kids to reenact, with a number of different outcomes each time. Don’t think that video games are for couch potatoes, however. With the addition of new counsels, some video games encourage kids to get up and move about in order to complete the levels. Others have an educational focus that gets kids thinking quick while completing puzzles and games. Of course, more traditional video games welcome a virtual world where kids have fun imagining they are a famous athlete, running a busy restaurant, or taking care of a beloved pet.
